In addition to small mammal surveys (link to small mammals: science), mammal surveys are being undertaken across the site. It is widely accepted that large numbers of deer have negative impacts on woodland, tree planting and agriculture.
In order to understand the deer populations in the area, we have carried out a Deer Activity and Woodland Impact Assessment.
From this baseline, we will continue to monitor woodland impact assessment alongside a deer management plan working with our neighbouring landowners to ensure we maintain healthy herd densities that support positive ecological habitat restoration at Sapperton Wilder.
Additionally, the use of thermal imaging scopes is allowing us to begin to understand how mammals use the site during the night.
